The University’s main campus is located in Athens, approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta, with extended campuses in Atlanta, Griffin, Gwinnett, and Tifton. The University’s enrollment exceeds 41,000 students including over 31,000 undergraduates and over 10,000 graduate and professional students. Academic programs reside in 19 schools and colleges, including our newly established School of Medicine. About The College/Unit/Department The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery comprises approximately 50 faculty members, 51 clinical residents, 10 rotating interns, seven specialty interns, and three administrative staff members. Shared laboratory space and technical support are provided within the Department, and six dedicated research technicians assist in the research missions of the Department’s faculty. Specialties within the Department include anesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, neurology, nutrition, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, radiology, shelter medicine, soft tissue surgery, and zoological medicine, as well as a community practice program. The Department participates in the college-wide veterinary, graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.), and undergraduate programs. Department members also actively collaborate with faculty members from other departments within the college and other colleges on campus including the College of Public Health, College of Engineering, Department of Nutrition, Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, the University of Georgia School of Medicine, the Athens campus of the Medical College of Georgia, and the Precision One Health Initiative. There are external collaborations through organizations such as the Clinical and Translational Science Alliance, which includes The University of Georgia, Emory University, Georgia Tech University, and Morehouse University, and with other universities within and outside of the state of Georgia. The Department has a strong track record for teaching, research, and clinical service. The University of Georgia, the nation’s first chartered state-supported university, is a research-intensive land and sea grant university in the vibrant college town of Athens. Only an hour from Atlanta, Athens is a progressive locale with a rich history centered among beautiful surrounding landscapes. The area abounds in local music, art, literature, and theatre and hosts many performances by national and international touring artists.
