Job Description
Position Summary The Operator - Asphalt Laydown Crew is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a variety of heavy construction equipment used in highway construction and materials production, including, but not limited to, pavers, screeds, and rollers.Operators may be assigned to a specific piece of equipment or to a variety of machines based on experience, training, and project needs.This role contributes directly to the successful completion of roadwork, earthmoving, grading, paving, and related construction activities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Operate heavy construction equipment in a safe and productive manner, in compliance with company safety standards and equipment specifications. Equipment may include, but is not limited to: Excavators Dozers Loaders Rollers and compactors Screeds Asphalt pavers and milling machines Water trucks and distributor trucks Crushers, hot plants, and related material processing equipment Generators and auxiliary machinery Perform daily pre-operation inspections and report equipment condition to supervisors or mechanics. Understand and follow grade plans, staking, and guidance from project supervisors. Collaborate with crew members to ensure tasks are completed according to project timelines and specifications. Use equipment to cut, fill, load, spread, compact, and otherwise move or shape materials such as earth, gravel, asphalt, or aggregates. Follow site-specific safety requirements, including traffic control protocols and PPE usage. Assist in minor maintenance or cleaning of equipment as needed. Accurately report equipment hours and maintenance needs. Maintain awareness of surroundings and communicate effectively with ground personnel, truck drivers, and other operators. May be reassigned to other equipment or general labor duties based on project demands and the operator's skill set. Handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism. Proactively communicate goals, purpose, and proposed changes to the supervisor to ensure alignment with company objectives. Cross-train with team members and perform additional duties as needed. Qualifications Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment in highway or civil construction preferred. Familiarity with safe operating techniques and hazard awareness in active construction zones. Current operator certifications or endorsements (as required for equipment or job site). Valid driver's license with clean driving record required; CDL may be required for certain equipment (e.g., water trucks, distributor trucks). Ability to read and interpret grade stakes, plans, or verbal instructions. Ability to climb, sit, stand, or operate equipment for extended periods. Able to lift 50 lbs unassisted and perform physical labor as required. Ability to safely enter and exit heavy equipment.
