Job Description
Under the supervision of the Building Trades Manager, this role is primarily responsible for painting, surface preparation, and window restoration across Old Sturbridge Village’s historic and support buildings. This role supports the preservation and appearance of structures through high quality finish work and detailed restoration. The position also preforms general maintenance and light carpentry tasks as needed to maintain the integrity, safety, and overall condition of the Village’s buildings and grounds, including support structures and the schools. Key Responsibilities: Preform interior and exterior painting, including surface preparation, priming, and finish work. Restore historic windows, including scraping, glazing, sanding, and minor wood repair. Perform carpentry tasks, including framing to finish, and the installation of structures and fixtures. Execute general maintenance work orders and building repairs. Assist with light carpentry tasks. Responsible for snow and ice control during winter months to ensure safe access to the Village. Assist with moving and transporting materials and supplies, including signature event setup and breakdown. Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition. Demonstrate a commitment to valuing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Provide general hand tools and maintain OSV power tools. Demonstrate a strong willingness to engage in historical preservation techniques and practices. Qualifications : 3+ years of professional painting experience. Proven experience in general maintenance and repairs. Experience with snow and ice control. Skilled in painting and surface preparation techniques. Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups and contribute to an inclusive environment. Valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a hoisting license. Essential Skills: Strong knowledge of painting techniques, and materials. Detail-oriented with a focus on safety and quality workmanship. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently. Light carpentry experience. Effectively manage time and prioritize tasks to meet project deadlines while delivering high-quality work on schedule. Provide regular updates on project status and completion. Utilize resources effectively to minimize waste. Identify and resolve challenges to minimize delays. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Ability to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in all work and interactions Safety and Museum Standards: Ensure the safety and cleanliness of all work areas; share responsibility with all staff for the clean and neat appearance of the entire museum. Provide the best experience possible for all visitors by maintaining high standards of work quality and professional conduct in public-facing areas. Safeguard visitors and staff by being alert to foreseeable health and safety hazards. Participate in various projects or tasks as assigned by the Building Trades Manager. Understand and observe all Village policies. Other duties as required. Physical Demands: Frequently required to stand and walk for extended periods while performing duties across the museum campus, including over varied terrain (paved, unpaved, and uneven surfaces). Frequently required to use hands to handle tools and materials and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to climb ladders and maintain balance on elevated surfaces. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl to access work areas in confined or low spaces. Must regularly lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds unassisted and occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment: Frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions while performing exterior maintenance, grounds, and snow removal duties. Occasionally exposed to high and precarious places while working on ladders or elevated equipment. May be exposed to dust, fumes, and materials associated with general
