Position Description With more than 200 attorneys and professional staff, the Seattle City Attorney’s Office is one of the largest law offices in Seattle and is the third-largest public law office in the state. The Constitutional and Complex Litigation Section defends lawsuits against the City of Seattle and brings affirmative litigation in practice areas including constitutional, charter, regulatory, ethics, public records, and municipal and local government powers. Additionally, attorneys are involved in litigation involving the Seattle Police Department defending 1983 cases alleging violations of constitutional rights and representing the City in inquest trial proceedings. The Seattle City Attorney’s Office is seeking a litigation paralegal to work in the Constitutional and Complex Litigation Section. The position will provide litigation support to the attorneys in the section at both the trial and appellate phases in City, State, and Federal court actions. Job Responsibilities Performing factual research, including document review, management, and records research Managing pre-trial discovery, including preparation of discovery requests and responses, document collection from departmental clients, document review, organization and indexing, and preparation of document and deposition summaries Assisting attorneys to prepare for hearings and trials, including proofreading and cite-checking of briefs, preparation of trial notebooks and court copies Assisting in preparation of witness testimony, oral and written Preparing and complete court filings and service of documents Managing court deadlines Reviewing large volume of electronic and hard copy records for responsiveness and redaction Providing other assistance to the section, office, and the team as required Qualifications To be successful in this role, you will have: Working knowledge of court rules in City, State, and Federal trial and appellate courts. Demonstrated ability to Organize and track multiple complex projects simultaneously Collaborate with individuals at all levels, addressing complex and high-profile problems Work independently, providing timely results Manage court deadlines, discovery, witness preparation, and general trial preparation. Working level proficiency in Proofreading, with attention to detail Case management software such as Nuix or Relativity Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word) This Position Requires One Of The Following A bachelor’s degree and two years’ experience performing paralegal duties A certification from a nationally accredited paralegal training institution and three years of related experience A combination of education, training, and experience that provides an equivalent background Please note this job advertisement is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of the activities, duties, or responsibilities required of the employee for this job.
