Job Description
JOB An employee in this class supervises full- and part-time staff and seasonal workers in the maintenance and repair of all parks and recreation grounds. Employee plans daily, weekly, monthly, and annually for maintenance, housekeeping, repair, and landscaping activities of grounds and facilities, including turf and athletic field management. Work involves a full range of supervisory responsibilities carried out through intervening crew leaders on a daily basis. Sound judgment and initiative are required in the performance of duties. Employee ensures that all work is performed according to OSHA standards, rules, regulations, and Town policies. Oversees required safety training. Work is performed under general supervision of the Park Superintendent and is evaluated through observation of facilities and parks, discussion, and public acceptance. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Plans for departmental services six to twelve months in advance and develops specific plans monthly and weekly according to the annual plan of events, program activities, seasonal maintenance needs, and special projects relating to expansion of the Parks resources.Schedules work and assigns crews to ensure that all work is completed within established deadlines; schedules coverage for weekend functions; monitors each employee's hours worked; evaluates and inspects completed work; and prioritizes work.Supervises staff and seasonal workers; participates in hiring; ensures training of staff; takes disciplinary action; and provides recommendations to the Park Superintendent.Completes maintenance, safety, and damage reports.Ensures all vehicles and equipment are maintained and operational at all times; oversees routine maintenance, minor construction, and repair of equipment; coordinates major repair with the Director.Supervises and ensures maintenance and upkeep of landscaping, open space, and grounds including playgrounds, picnic areas, and other recreational areas.Schedules, supervises, and ensures athletic field maintenance and set-up for practices, games, tournaments, and other events.Schedules staff necessary to oversee events, weekend tournaments, and needs related to inclement weather.Supervises and directs crews and assists with determining fertilizing, reseeding, sodding, irrigation, and field prep.Operates handheld and large equipment as necessary to accomplish maintenance mission Determines materials, supplies, and equipment needed for each assignment; orders supplies and equipment.Oversees snow and ice removal.Participates in mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, fertilizing, irrigating, pest control, and snow/ice removal.Works on construction projects, cleans buildings, paints, replaces light bulbs, arranges furniture, and performs other building and facility maintenance and repair.Participates in storm clean up and debris removal.Maintains and repairs of equipment and vehicles at a high skill level. Performs preventative maintenance and makes repairs on department-owned equipment as needed.Records and codes receipts for expenses.Maintains vendor contact information.Performs other related duties as assigned. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Graduation from high school or GED. Minimum of 8 years of related experience. Experience supervising employees and/or projects; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.Special Requirements•Ornamental and Turf Pesticide Applicator’s License, or ability to obtain within 12 months.•Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.•CPR certification, or the ability to obtain within 6 months.
