Location: Rapid City, SD Job Summary: This position responds to emergency calls in order to provide efficient and immediate care to critically ill and injured patients. This is a Part-time position. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Responds to 911 calls and reports to emergency scenes to provide timely medical assistance. Assesses patient conditions, determines the nature and extent of illness or injury, establishes care priorities, and selects appropriate courses of action. Provides basic life support and first aid, including CPR, AED use, airway management, ventilation, spinal stabilization, bleeding control, shock prevention, wound care, and patient stabilization. Administers approved medications and treatments, including oxygen, oral glucose, and activated charcoal, as indicated. Documents patient assessments, treatments provided, and patient responses by completing accurate patient care reports. Communicates patient observations and treatment information to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare personnel during patient transfer. Transports patients who do not require advanced life support to appropriate medical facilities. Maintains ambulance readiness by cleaning, disinfecting, restocking, and replacing medical equipment and supplies, including infection control procedures. Provides reassurance and maintains professional communication with patients, family members, and the public. Maintains required certifications, completes continuing education, and meets established medical, physical agility, and fitness standards. Remains available for irregular schedules, extended shifts, emergency call-ins, and assignment to Incident Command roles consistent with training and abilities. Qualifications: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) 18 years of age or older Certified as an EMT by the State of South Dakota or be Nationally Registered as an EMT and possess a State of South Dakota EMT license prior to start date. Possession of a compact state license is accepted as the equivalent for the first 30 days. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Work Environment: Most work is performed in fire stations and in the field at emergency medical scenes, including fire scenes, mass casualty incidents, and other extraordinary events as they occur. Duties are frequently performed under emergency conditions and may require strenuous physical exertion. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, use hands, talk, and hear. The employee may be exposed to heavy lifting, moving equipment, traffic hazards, falling objects, extreme temperatures, cramped or confined spaces, and emotionally stressful situations, including exposure to serious injury, death, contagious diseases, and terminal illness. The employee must frequently lift, push, pull, and carry heavy objects, including patients and equipment, with lifting requirements that may exceed 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, and peripheral vision.
