Job Description
The Part-Time Ranger I position is a POST-certified law enforcement role responsible for patrolling and safeguarding HCWA boat ramps, recreational areas, and other Authority properties. This position operates a variety of vehicles—including boats, ATVs, and side-by-sides—to monitor public use, ensure compliance with regulations, and promote safety. The Ranger works closely with Safety and Risk Unit (SRU) members during criminal investigations and conducts regular patrols of all HCWA facilities and assets. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Conducts field patrol of HCWA properties, including but not limited to, reservoirs, mitigation sites, sprayfields, as well as monitoring of our reservoir buffers via foot, vehicle, ATV, UTV and boat. Promotes and enforces current Georgia Hunting and Fishing Laws, as well as Rules and Regulations on HCWA property. Maintains accurate records and a daily log of activities. Properly documents any violations encountered. Must be willing to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed. Issues warnings and citations to violators; conducts investigations of reported criminal and/or non-criminal offenses/incidents to collect evidence, statements, and other relevant information; may be required to provide testimony in court regarding investigations and/or citations. Responds to and performs effectively in emergency situations until relieved by the appropriate agency or appropriate supervisor; responds to problem situations after normal scheduled hours as required. Must be able to tow, back, and unload boat or equipment-hauling trailers. Assists Safety and Risk Unit in other duties, such as training or traffic control. Provides information to visitors about HCWA policies and procedures on lake use, and how to acquire a Reservoir Use or Access Permit, should they meet the requirements. Inspects boats operating on HCWA Reservoirs for required safety equipment. Education and/or Experience : High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification. Knowledge of state criminal laws, state boating laws, and county/HCWA ordinances. Must be able to swim. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations : Valid Georgia Driver's License. Current and active POST law enforcement certification is required. First Aid / CPR Certification. Must obtain their NSBC On-Water Control and HCWA Boat Operators Certification within 6 months of employment.
