JOB SUMMARY The Phlebotomist at North Mississippi Health Services plays a critical role in the collection and transportation of lab specimens. This role ensures the accurate and efficient transport of lab-related supplies, equipment, and specimens while adhering to regulatory guidelines and safety standards. The phlebotomist is responsible for proper specimen handling, processing, and conducting venipunctures, finger sticks, and other procedures on various patient populations. JOB FUNCTIONS Distribution and Transportation Accurately and efficiently transports lab-related supplies, equipment and specimens. Transport specimens in compliance with regulatory guidelines. Responsible for maintenance and appearance of assigned specimen processing vehicles. Abides all laws and regulations while driving assigned vehicle. Specimen Handling & Processing: Properly identifies patients and collects specimens in compliance with regulatory guidelines. Processes specimens and accurately applies appropriate barcode labels prior to delivery to specific lab departments for testing. Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, heel sticks, assists physician with bone marrow collection, point of care glucose and iSTAT testing in compliance with regulatory guidelines on all applicable patient populations at facility and area nursing homes. Communication: Accurately and efficiently address/respond to inquiries concerning specimen processing. Customer Service. Answer telephone in an polite and efficient manner. Employee Relations: Works as part of a team with all Pathology and NMHS employees. Reporting/Recordkeeping: Accurately reports point of care testing results in timely manner. Accurately performs point of care quality control. Accurately documents all necessary information on patient specimen tubes/containers and in Laboratory Information System (LIS). Assist with maintaining inventory related to specimen processing. Education: Participates in continuing education programs to maintain and expand skills. Regulation: Adheres to NMHS/NMMC Policies/Procedures/Guidelines. Complies with applicable Local/State/Federal policies/procedures/guideline/regulations/laws/statues. Adheres to OSHA, CLIA, CAP & CLSI standards. QUALIFICATIONS Education High School Diploma or GED Equivalent . Required Licenses and Certifications DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State ASCP - Medical Technologist Work Experience 1-3 years Knowledge Skills and Abilities Proficient computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel); required Good organizational and communication (written and verbal) skills; required Knowledge of and appropriate handling of biohazardous specimens; required Strong interpersonal skills; required Prioritize and organize specimen procurement requests Communicates effectively Provides excellent service to internal and external customers Efficiently and accurately provide assistance to customers Must have extensive contact with: Laboratory and hospital staff (including physicians) Must have good written and verbal communication skills Must reflect a positive, caring attitude toward clients, patients, staff and the public we serve Physical Demands A thorough completion of this section is needed for compliance with legal standards such as the Americans with Disabilities Act.
