JOB The Planning Department offers a structured career ladder that supports employee growth and advancement across roles. Placement within the ladder is based on each individual’s experience, education, training, and demonstrated competencies.PLANNING APPRENTICEThe Planning Apprentice position is the introductory entry point into the Planning Department, suited to highly motivated individuals who demonstrate strong promise and aptitude, but who do not possess extensive experience, specific training or formal education in the planning or related fields. The position involves hands on exposure to the daily operations of a municipal planning department, including foundational engagement with land use, zoning, subdivision regulations, and development review. The Planner Apprentice performs work of routine difficulty under direct supervision and receives close and continuous direction from the Planner I and Planner II. The Sr. Planner provides ongoing assistance and support to the position on technical planning matters.PLANNERThe Planner position is the entry level professional position within the Planning Department. The position involves professional level duties and judgment along with some routine administrative tasks. The Planner operates with general supervision and receives ongoing assistance and support from the Sr. Planner on technical planning matters.PLANNER IIThe Planner II position involves professional planning work of moderate difficulty. It is characterized by increasingly specialized knowledge of the planning field and a more elevated level of duties and responsibilities compared with the Planner. The Planner II works more independently than a Planner and receives ongoing assistance and support from the Sr. Planner on complex planning matters. The Planner II takes an active role in the department on the implementation of goals and initiatives. SR. PLANNERThe Sr. Planner requires advanced professional planning experience of high complexity and variety. Some functions are similar to those of the Planner II level, though the Planner Ill/Sr. Planner often leads or is significantly involved with larger, higher profile planning assignments. Planners at this level take on a higher role in departmental tasks, exercise greater independence and judgment, receiving general supervision from senior management.
