Description The City of Roanoke is seeking a Part-Time Plans Examiner II to review building plans and proposed construction (new or existing) for compliance with applicable legal standards. This position supports the permitting process by ensuring adherence to building and zoning codes and promoting safe construction design. The role is part-time and may involve a flexible or reduced work schedule, with hours determined based on departmental needs. The successful candidate may also assist with providing guidance and limited training to design professionals, contractors, and citizens on code-related issues. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and one to three years of related experience and/or training in building inspection or plans review, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A valid driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. The employee must possess and maintain certifications required by the Uniform Statewide Building Code and the City of Roanoke, including Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire Plans Examiner certifications. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Reviews building plans as part of the application and permitting process to ensure compliance with building and zoning codes. Assists builders, contractors, property owners, and the public with questions regarding plan review and applicable regulations. Performs basic to intermediate plan reviews for code compliance. Prepares reports and maintains accurate records of plan reviews and findings. May provide training, presentations, or informational sessions on code-related topics as needed. May testify in court on building code-related cases when required.
