Job Description
Patrol Officer A patrol officer's responsibility involves the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances in a designated area on an assigned shift, or on special assignments. The work involves an element of personal danger and the employee must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies. The work assignments are general, and special instructions are received from a supervisor. Work is reviewed by inspection, observation of results and thorough oral and written reports. Responsibilities include patrolling city streets, roads and public places, checking buildings to ensure safety, directing traffic, investigating automobile accidents, making arrests, investigating suspicious incidents, issuing warnings or citations, operating police vehicles, detecting and interviewing suspicious persons, answering calls for service, identifying and solving community conflicts, conducting follow-up investigations, operating equipment for detecting intoxicants, serving as traffic controller at special events, providing assistance and information to citizens and motorists, reporting maintenance needs, testifying in court proceedings, investigating hazardous conditions, checking for stray animals, attending training classes, being proficient in the use and care of firearms and other weapons, maintaining records and preparing reports, operating computer systems, and demonstrating clear communications skills. Qualifications include an Associate Degree in Police Science or relevant Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university or college, or 60 semester hours undergraduate credits in Law Enforcement or related field, or an equal amount of Law Enforcement experience, meeting the minimum requirements set forth by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board, and a valid State of Wisconsin Operator's License.
