Job Description
As a Primary Care Assistant at Mercy within our Healthcare & Medical Services department, you will play a vital hands-on role in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care in a fast-paced primary care environment. Working closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other members of the care team, you will support day-to-day clinic operations and help ensure that every patient receives timely, respectful, and personalized attention. In this role, you will greet and prepare patients for their visits, obtain and document vital signs, medical histories, and chief complaints, and assist with basic clinical procedures as allowed by your scope of practice and training. You will help maintain exam rooms and clinical equipment, support infection control practices, and ensure supplies are stocked and organized. You may assist with tasks such as administering vaccines and injections under supervision, performing basic tests, collecting specimens, supporting EKGs or other simple diagnostics, and providing clear instructions to patients about follow-up care as directed by the provider. You will also perform a variety of administrative duties that keep the primary care clinic running smoothly. These responsibilities include scheduling and confirming appointments, coordinating referrals and diagnostic testing, updating and managing electronic health records (EHR), handling patient check-in and check-out, verifying basic insurance information, and responding to patient questions or requests with empathy and professionalism. Strong communication skills and attention to detail are essential, as you will regularly communicate with patients, families, providers, and other departments to coordinate safe, efficient care. At Mercy, you will be part of an organization recognized for comprehensive medical services and a deep commitment to community health across the Midwest. Our culture emphasizes compassion, diversity, respect, and collaboration, and we encourage our team members to bring forward ideas that enhance patient experience and clinical quality. As a Primary Care Assistant, you will be supported by leaders and colleagues who value your contributions, provide mentoring, and offer opportunities to broaden your clinical and administrative skills. Mercy is dedicated to your professional growth. In this position, you will have access to continuous learning through in-service training, skills development, and potential tuition support or internal mobility opportunities. You will gain broad exposure to a variety of patient populations, chronic disease management, preventive care, and health education, making this role an excellent foundation for a long-term career in healthcare. Whether you aspire to advance into nursing, care coordination, specialty clinics, or healthcare management, the experience you gain as a Primary Care Assistant can be an important step in your career progression. This is an onsite, patient-facing role that requires reliability, flexibility, and a genuine passion for helping others. You should be comfortable working on your feet for much of the day, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, and adapting to changing patient volumes and clinical needs. Mercy offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and retirement savings options, to support your overall wellbeing while you help us fulfill our mission of providing exceptional, compassionate care to the communities we serve.
