Job Description
This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and any future vacancies within the Probation Department. The anticipated life of the employment list is six months. Multiple vacancies are with the Probation Department located in Visalia. The anticipated life of the list is six months. BSCC T-Scores are transferable, if you have taken the BSCC exam within the past 12 months and have passed it you may be exempted from testing. Please let us know before any test day is given to you otherwise you will have to retake the exam. Peace Officer Status Requirements: Probation Correctional Officers are peace officers and must meet all the minimum standards pursuant to California Penal and Government codes. Typical Duties Perform Peace Officer duties as defined by PC 830.5.. Supervise and instruct an assigned group of youth in various vocational, maintenance and recreational activities. Observe, evaluate, and report on the conduct, needs, personality, adjustment and progress of youth. Takes security measures such as patrolling, doing bed checks and unscheduled head counts, searching facilities and youth for contraband, monitoring phone calls and mail and investigating suspicious persons and vehicles. Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which are required and equivalent to the following. Education: Equivalent to two (2) years of college preferably with major coursework in one of the behavioral or social science fields. Equivalency for Education: Two (2) years of increasingly responsible public contact work. Experience: None. Knowledge of: Basic indoor and outdoor recreational activities and games. Basic math. Skill/Ability to: Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers. Operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment. Observe unusual, suspicious, or unsafe situations and activities, and take appropriate action. Recognize unusual, abnormal, or atypical behavior. See the full list in link. License or Certificate: Possession of for ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license. Earned certificate for successful completion of courses in CPR and First Aid within the first year of hire. Earned certificate for the successful completion of PC 832 within the first year of hire. Earned certificate for the successful completion of Juvenile Correctional Officer Core within the first year of hire. Additional Information Conditions of Employment: Prior to employment, applicants must successfully complete and pass a written examination; an oral interview; a medical examination, including a drug and alcohol screen; a physical ability test; a psychological evaluation, and a thorough background investigation to assess their fitness for the position.
