Job Description
Title: Protection and Control Engineer / Engineering Technologist (Varies) Company: Tampa Electric Company State and City: Florida - Tampa Shift: 8 Hr. X 5 Days Engineer classification is multi-level, based on the qualification guidelines outlined in the Company’s Engineer Career Path, Administrative Policy 2.13. A minimum classification of an Engineer I or Engineering Technologist I is required in this position. Engineering Technologist classification is multi-level, based on the qualification guidelines outlines in the Company’s Engineering Technologist Career Path POSITION CONCEPT Provides engineering and operations support for substation protection and control. Additionally, provides relay settings consulting and guidance relating to distribution substation protection. Primary Duties And Responsibilities Consulting with Electric Delivery’s System Security Department, establish protection requirements and operating philosophy and development of relay protection and control schemes consistent with TEC system requirements. (15%) Represent and coordinate the various Substation Engineering projects within Electric Delivery’s Project Management process. (15%) Investigate and evaluate available protection and control devices and provide input into the selection and purchase of materials. Follow up on equipment delivery and assure correct charging to projects. Check manufacturers drawing for accuracy. (15%) Engineering support of operating departments during checkouts, on-call rotations and as required. Provide interpretation of engineering design during the construction phase of project. Obtain feedback from operating personnel during construction phase of project for improvement on subsequent designs. (15%) Development of all protection and control drawings for assigned projects including preliminaries, layout and installation drawings, wiring diagrams, bills of material, nameplate schedules and cable schedules. Prepare and submit work orders and other associated paperwork along with necessary drawings to the operating departments. Support Protection & Control crews during work. Reconciliation of all records, prints, etc. once work is completed. Also includes writing operating and switching instructions. (40%) RELATIONSHIPS Key Internal: All Electric Delivery departments, including Substation Operations, System Security, Project Management, Accounting, Purchasing, Planning, and Energy Supply. Key External: Maintain frequent contact with other utility and industry personnel, vendors and participate in relevant professional organizations (i.e. IEEE PES PSRC & Substations Committee) as budgets permit. SUPERVISION Direct: None Indirect: May provide guidance, training, and consult as relay engineering specialist to other P&C engineers on substation relaying schemes and calculations. Qualifications Required: Engineer I - Minimum 18 months of experience or 12 months experience with an FE Engineering Technologist I – Minimum 3.5 years experience (3 with FE) Engineer II – Minimum 4 Years Of Experience Engineering Technologist II – Minimum 6 years of experience Senior Engineer – Minimum 8 years of experience and eligibility to become a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida. Senior Engineering Technologist – Minimum Of 10 Years Of Experience Principle Engineer – Minimum 12 years and must be a licensed Professional Engineer. Education Required: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program Engineering Technology Degree from ABET accredited program is accepted Licenses/Certifications Required: Eligible to obtain an FE in the State of Florida and must obtain within the first 2 years of employment Preferred: Professional Engineering License in the State of Florida Related Experience Required: Minimum of 2 years of experience in power system engineering and operations. Supervisory Experience Required: None Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required: Must have sound knowledge of or basis to learn protection and control systems to interpret Substation and manufacturer’s drawings and to be able to independently evaluate and modify system designs.
