Job Description Summary The following duties for the Manager of Laboratories pertain to the education and research programs of the Jefferson College of Life Science's Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences at the Jefferson‐East Falls campus. This is a staff position that includes assisting with course strategies and supervising lab operations. Job Duties Serve as point person for all areas of laboratory safety, including chemical and biological waste disposal matters and coordinate disposal of hazardous and biohazard waste. They will participate in the University Safety & Compliance Committee, conduct periodic laboratory safety inspections and maintain related records in compliance with university policies. The Manager of Laboratories will ensure the maintenance of the collection of Safety Data Sheets. Oversee the chemical stockroom, proper chemical storage, and maintain a current chemical inventory working with relevant faculty. Respond to emergencies according to University protocol and assist in accident incident investigations and follow‐up as needed and provide oversight for maintenance of East Falls campus Biology, Chemistry, and Gross Anatomy Labs, including assistance on cadaver delivery and removal days. Support faculty with laboratory needs for teaching and research. This will include collecting research project summaries and ordering requested chemicals, supplies, and equipment. This includes developing relationships with supply vendors and effectively negotiating competitive pricing. Transaction records will be needed for administrative uses. Work with faculty to purchase, organize for repair or replacement, and the service of science laboratory equipment. They will oversee science laboratory infrastructure maintenance and manage service contracts on scientific instruments including maintenance of the microscope collection, balances and pipettes. Coordinate with other colleges relating to shared research space and projects. This will include maintenance of records relating to projects being conducted in College of Life Sciences spaces by others and working with other colleges on behalf of College of Life Sciences researchers to use spaces from other colleges. Directly oversee a Lab Coordinator who will assist them with duties related to ordering and record keeping. They will coordinate with Course Directors as they plan to hire, supervise, and direct student employees and laboratory technician support staff in the organization and preparation of laboratories. They will facilitate faculty, staff, and student safety training. Other related duties as designated including supervision of assigned staff. This may include ensuring coverage of personnel for occasional evening or weekend support to faculty or students as required. Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.(Do not delete, move or over-write this statement) Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, chemistry, biology or a related scientific discipline 2 years of professional experience related to the duties and responsibilities specified General knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations is required. Current on OSHA/DOT training. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds required. Preferred Qualifications Master’s Degree in environmental science, chemistry, biology or a related scientific discipline Physical Demands Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
