Job Description
Title: RTU Engineer (Varies) Company: Tampa Electric Company State and City: Florida - Tampa Shift: 8 Hr. X 5 Days POSITION CONCEPT Provides engineering and operations support for all substation Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) related functions. Primary Duties And Responsibilities Consult with other relevant departments (i.e. Telecomm., Planning, Distribution Engineering, Energy Supply, Dispatch, IT, other utilities, etc.), establish RTU requirements and operating philosophy and development consistent with TEC system requirements. (25%) Provide guidance, training, and consultation as a RTU engineering specialist to design engineers and Operating personnel. (10%) Investigate and evaluate available RTU equipment and devices and provide input into the selection and purchase of materials. Follow up on equipment delivery and assure correct charging to projects. Check manufacturers drawing for accuracy. (5%) Provide engineering support to the operations departments during checkout and as required. Provide interpretation of engineering design during the construction phase of project. Obtain feedback from operating personnel during construction phase of project for improvement on subsequent designs. (10%) Develop RTU configurations and drawings for assigned projects. Prepare and submit work orders and other associated documentation along with necessary drawings to the operating departments. Order materials needed for projects. Support RTU crews during work. Reconciliation of all records, prints, etc. once work is completed. (40%) RELATIONSHIPS Key Internal: All Electric Delivery departments, including Substation Operations, System Security, Project Management, Accounting, Purchasing, Compliance, Planning, IT and Energy Supply, etc. Key External: Maintain frequent contact with other utility and industry personnel, vendors and participate in relevant professional organizations (i.e. IEEE PES PSRC & Substations Committee) as budgets permit. SUPERVISION Direct: None Qualifications Required: Engineer I - Minimum 18 months of experience or 12 months experience with an FE Engineer II – Minimum 4 Years Of Experience Senior Engineer – Minimum 8 years of experience and eligibility to become a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida. Principle Engineer – Minimum 12 years and must be a licensed Professional Engineer. Education Required: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program Licenses/Certifications Required: Eligible to obtain an FE in the State of Florida and must obtain within the first 2 years of employment Preferred: Professional Engineering License in the State of Florida Related Experience Required: Minimum of 3 years of power utility engineering and operations experience. Supervisory Experience Required: None Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required Working knowledge of RTU/SCADA systems with the ability to interpret substation drawings, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer documentation. Familiarity with control/automation logic concepts (RTU logic, PLC-style logic, IEC 61131-3 concepts, or equivalent). Familiarity with SCADA protocols such as DNP3 and Modbus (serial and/or TCP/IP). Understanding of serial and IP-based communications networks used in substations (e.g., RS-232/RS-485, Ethernet, fiber, radio/cellular/microwave concepts). Preferred Experience with SEL RTAC and/or GE D20 (or equivalent RTU platforms) Experience with commissioning, troubleshooting, point mapping/database development, time synchronization, and event reporting/SOE. At higher levels, serves as an RTU/SCADA SME providing technical guidance and mentoring; may lead complex technical work and support development of standards and best practices.
