Sales Tax Compliance & Advisory Specialist (Volunteer) Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth experiencing housing instability through mentorship, education, and community. As MAP continues to expand across publishing, merchandise, civic design initiatives, and digital products, maintaining proper financial compliance and regulatory alignment is essential to protecting the organization and ensuring responsible stewardship of resources. Role Overview We are seeking a Sales Tax Compliance & Advisory Specialist to help guide MAP’s sales tax strategy, compliance practices, and reporting obligations related to merchandise, publishing, and product-based initiatives. This role will advise how nonprofit activities intersect with state and local sales tax regulations and ensure MAP’s systems properly track, collect, and report applicable taxes where required. Key Responsibilities Provide guidance on state and local sales tax requirements affecting MAP activities Advise on sales tax obligations related to merchandise, apparel, books, and digital products Review current systems to ensure proper sales tax collection and reporting procedures Support accounting team in maintaining accurate tax documentation and records Identify compliance risks and recommend mitigation strategies Provide guidance on multi-state sales tax considerations as MAP grows Assist in developing internal compliance documentation and procedures Qualifications Required Experience in sales tax compliance, tax advisory, accounting, or financial regulation Strong understanding of state and local sales tax frameworks Ability to translate tax regulations into clear operational guidance Strong attention to detail and compliance-oriented mindset Alignment with MAP’s mission and ethical standards Preferred CPA, tax professional certification, or equivalent experience Experience advising nonprofits or mission-driven organizations Familiarity with e-commerce, merchandise, or product-based tax considerations Experience with multi-state sales tax compliance Commitment Volunteer advisory role Approximately 3–5 hours per week Minimum 6-month commitment preferred Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration What You’ll Gain Opportunity to advise a growing mission-driven organization on financial compliance Collaboration with finance, legal, and operations leadership Professional references and letters of recommendation Meaningful role strengthening responsible financial governance At this time, volunteer opportunities are limited to individuals based in the United States due to legal, safeguarding, data‑privacy, and programmatic requirements.
