Job Description
QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent. Must hold current licensure as Registered Nurse (RN) Experience as a Nurse in the role of LPN or RN. Such additional qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS : Principal and/or District Health Coordinator and/or Superintendent/designee SUPERVISES : Health Services Assistants as assigned by District Health Coordinator and/or Superintendent/ Designee JOB GOAL: To enhance the educational process by the modification or removal of health-related barriers to learning and by promotion of an optimal level of wellness BASIC FUNCTION: Administer first aid according to established procedures; conduct a variety of health screenings; prepare and maintain accurate student medical records. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES Provide health services in accordance with KRS 156.502. Participate in the development and procedures to guide nursing practice in school settings and to address expanding school health services to students, families and community. Obtain Early Periodic Screening Diagnosis and Treatment Training if deemed necessary by the school district. Exercise professional and prudent judgment in determining whether the performance of a given act is within the scope of practice for which the nurse is licensed and clinically competent to perform. Provides health teaching with a focus on disease prevention, health promotion and health restoration to students, parents, and school staff as required by supervisor. Administers first aid or nursing care for accidents, seizures, preventive medicine and other educational related medical problems; provides CPR and first aid to students and school employees as needed. Provides training to Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP). Delegates care as needed and appropriate (medication, treatment, procedures, etc.) Conducts height, weight, vision, hearing, scoliosis and other health screenings as required; provides screening for head lice and observe students on a regular basis to detect health needs. Refers students to appropriate personnel, resources or clinics and follow-up as necessary. Maintains health records and medical logs; updates immunization and student health records in Infinite Campus; prepares and submits periodical medical reports for appropriate organizations or District personnel and assures compliance with established laws and regulations. Dispenses and retains medication and performs medical treatment in accordance with physician’s instructions within District guidelines. Communicates with various community health agencies and civic organizations as directed. Provides information and makes recommendations to Principals, substitutes, teachers and parents regarding health issues of students and school health program needs; develops programs to meet school health needs. Makes home visits as required. Inventories, maintains and orders first aid supplies; assures medical equipment is in proper working condition. Participates in screening for health defects and sanitary conditions in schools. Contacts parents in the event of a student's illness or condition requiring the student’s dismissal from school; provides screening upon return to school to insure student health condition. Works cooperatively with parents in addressing student’s health and hygiene issues. Completes all medical forms required for field trips. Maintains current knowledge of medical advances and information, and treatment procedures. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal, District Health Coordinator and/or the Superintendent/Designee.
