Job Description
Opto-Mechanical Engineer — Next-Generation Sensing Systems Join a team pushing the boundaries of advanced sensing technology used across robotics, automation, autonomous vehicles, aerospace, and other cutting-edge fields. We design high-performance LiDAR systems and optical hardware that must thrive in extreme environments—requiring creativity, precision, and deep technical insight. We are searching for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer who can translate ambitious product concepts into rugged, production-ready optical systems. You will play a central role in designing, modeling, and validating opto-mechanical assemblies that maintain exceptional performance under demanding thermal and vibration conditions. This is a highly collaborative position that partners closely with mechanical, electrical, reliability, test, and manufacturing teams. What You’ll Do Own the opto-mechanical design process from initial concept through production release for advanced sensing hardware. Create robust designs capable of operating across wide thermal ranges and intense vibration environments. Perform detailed FEA simulations to predict structural and thermal behavior, ensuring design durability and stability. Develop hardware validation plans, design custom test fixtures, and lead hands-on testing to confirm optical and mechanical performance. Produce precise mechanical and optical component drawings using ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards. Define and analyze tolerances for high-volume manufacturing of both optical elements and mechanical components. Collaborate with fabrication partners to source, inspect, and qualify high-precision components. Partner with quality and reliability teams to ensure systems meet all required environmental and ruggedization benchmarks. Required Background Strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles with experience building complex optical or multi-domain systems. Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD tools. Expertise in mechanical drafting and GD&T application. Experience working with optical component suppliers and external design partners. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. 5+ years of experience in mechanical or opto-mechanical product development. Preferred Experience Hands-on familiarity with precision metrology instruments and measurement techniques. Background in designing and evaluating adhesive bond joints. Experience developing LiDAR systems or other high-precision optical hardware. Exposure to high-volume manufacturing of opto-mechanical assemblies. Proficiency with FEA tools such as ANSYS for structural and thermal simulation. Introductory experience with Zemax or other optical modeling software. Understanding of STOP (Structural–Thermal–Optical Performance) analyses. Familiarity with reliability testing including thermal cycling, shock, and vibration. Knowledge of ISO 10110 optical drawing standards. Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field. If you thrive at the intersection of optics, mechanics, and product realization—and you’re motivated by building technology that advances automation and perception—this role offers a rare opportunity to shape the next generation of scalable sensing systems.
