Job Description
The Sign Installer supports field safety and compliance by setting up and maintaining temporary traffic control devices across Universal Services work zones.This role is responsible for the delivery, setup, maintenance, and removal of signs, cones, barrels, barricades, and sandbags, following MN DOT safety regulations.Sign Installers must be reliable, physically capable, and able to work in high-traffic areas and in all weather conditions to protect crews and the public.Core Responsibilities Traffic Control & Sign Installation Prepare and set up work zones using appropriate signage, cones, barricades, and sandbags Ensure all setups follow MN DOT's Temporary Traffic Control Zone Layouts field manual Load and unload trucks with traffic control equipment Set up and remove signs and safety gear in both low- and high-traffic areas Deliver lifts or other equipment to field sites as requested Field Safety & Flagging Support Support flagging operations, directing traffic and protecting on-site crews Monitor jobsite conditions and adjust signage or setup for changing conditions Communicate hazards, adjustments, and safety concerns to supervisor promptly Shop & Yard Maintenance Fill and store sandbags as needed Assist with assembling, repairing, and maintaining signs and barricades Organize tools, signs, and equipment in the shop and yard Assist with general warehouse tasks when not on site Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred Valid driver's license and insurable driving record (required) 1year of experience in road construction, traffic control, or related physical labor Ability to lift 50-75 lbs.repeatedly throughout the day Willingness and ability to work in outdoor environments year-round Preferred Skills Experience working with traffic control devices or signage setup Familiarity with MN DOT regulations and work zone layout standards Strong awareness of safety procedures in road construction environments Ability to follow verbal and written directions precisely Strong organizational habits and attention to detail Physical Demands & Competencies Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry 50-75 lbs.repeatedly Requires prolonged standing, bending, reaching, stooping, and walking Operates in outdoor environments, exposed to all weather conditions Ability to monitor surroundings for safety hazards and traffic risks Requires use of hand tools, power tools, and motorized vehicles Work Schedule Full-time, non-exempt position Standard hours:Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM Work may occur during nights, weekends, or non-standard hours based on city restrictions and road usage Flexibility is required; overtime may be available during peak times All unexcused absences must be reported to the attendance hotline and supervisor Training & Development Expectations New Competencies Learn MN DOT field manual guidelines for temporary traffic control zones Gain knowledge of proper signage setups for different road types and conditions Complete safety training related to working on active roadways Demonstrate ability to set up and break down work zones without supervision Ongoing Refreshers Annual traffic safety and flagging procedure review Equipment maintenance and assembly best practices Updates to DOT requirements or traffic layout procedures Ongoing development through internal safety and operations training.
