Job Description
The Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) supports construction, renovation, and infrastructure work performed at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, a high-security DOE naval nuclear propulsion research facility. This role ensures strict compliance with project safety requirements, including OSHA 1926/1910 standards, USACE EM 385-1-1, DOE site security and safety protocols, and all Bettis nuclear facility procedures. The SSHO leads risk identification, daily field safety oversight, workforce training, documentation, and incident prevention under complex, highly regulated conditions. This position reports to the Project Manager and interfaces daily with Bettis safety personnel, federal oversight, subcontractors, and craft workforce. Responsibilities Site Safety Leadership & Oversight: Serve as the on-site safety authority responsible for full compliance with Company and project safety requirements, OSHA, EPA, DOE, USACE EM 385-1-1, and all relevant federal/state/local regulations. Maintain a continuous presence on the jobsite to oversee daily activities, identify hazards, and implement effective controls in alignment with the project's Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs/JHAs). Lead pre-task safety meetings, daily briefings, and weekly toolbox talks. Review and approve subcontractor safety plans, AHAs, and work control packages for technical accuracy and compliance. Inspections, Audits & Hazard Control: Conduct documented daily site inspections to verify compliance with health, safety, and environmental requirements. Develop corrective action plans and ensure closure of deficiencies.
