Sixth Grade Literature and Writing Teacher / Elective Teacher- Part-Time Position: Part-Time Sixth Grade Literature and Writing Teacher Additional Responsibilities: Quarterly Elective Teacher, Advisory Leader Reports to: Upper School Head Schedule: Part-time (3-4 hours per day), school-year position, Hours to be Determined Position Overview Old Orchard School seeks a thoughtful, enthusiastic, and skilled part-time Sixth Grade Literature and Writing Teacher to join our middle school faculty. This teacher will lead sixth grade students in a rich literature and writing curriculum that builds strong reading comprehension, literary analysis, written expression, grammar, vocabulary, and communication skills. In addition to teaching sixth grade literature and writing, this teacher will teach one elective course each quarter and lead one advisory group for the school year. We are looking for an educator who enjoys working with middle school students, values creativity and student voice, and can balance academic instruction with project-based learning. Key ResponsibilitiesSixth Grade Literature and Writing Collaborate with the seventh and eighth grade Language Arts teacher to plan engaging sixth grade literature and writing lessons aligned with school goals and student needs. Guide students in reading, discussing, and analyzing novels, short stories, poetry, essays, and other texts. Teach writing across genres, including narrative, expository, persuasive, analytical, and creative writing. Support students in the full writing process: brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Provide clear instruction in grammar, mechanics, vocabulary, sentence structure, and organization. Foster thoughtful discussion, close reading, curiosity, and independent thinking. Differentiate instruction to support a range of learners. Assess student progress through written assignments, projects, discussions, quizzes, and other measures. Utilize the online grading system to post assignments and grades and to complete report cards by assigned due dates. Provide timely and constructive feedback to students. Communicate with families and colleagues as needed regarding student progress. Elective Teaching Over the course of the school year, design and teach four elective courses in areas aligned with the teacher’s strengths and school needs, such as debate, creative writing, journalism, public speaking, literature circles, media literacy, or another approved topic. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required; degree in English, education, literature, writing, or a related field preferred. Teaching experience with middle school students required.. Strong background in literature, writing instruction, and student-centered teaching. Ability to create a warm, structured, and engaging classroom environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage deadlines. Comfort with Google Classroom and Google Suite. A collaborative spirit and willingness to contribute to the broader school community. Desired Qualities The ideal candidate will be: Warm, approachable, and effective with sixth grade students. Compensation $40-$44 per hour, commensurate with experience and aligned with the school’s part-time faculty salary structure.
