Candidates for this position must have their Texas Board license and be certified by the American Board for Certification (by examination). Prior experience in an academic teaching facility is preferred. The Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist applies physical disciplines that address neuromuscular and structural skeletal problems in the human body with a treatment process that includes evaluation and transfer of forces using orthoses or prostheses to achieve optimum function, prevent further disability, and provide cosmesis. The candidate will work directly with the physician and representatives of other allied health professions in the rehabilitation of the physically challenged. The orthotist designs and fits devices, known as orthoses, to provide care for patients who have disabling conditions of the limbs and spine. The prosthetist designs and fits devices known as prostheses for patients who have a partial or total absence of a limb. This role includes, but is not limited to, clinical assessment, patient management, technical implementation, practice management, and professional responsibility, instructing residents on prosthetics and orthotics, and research.
