Job Description
The Opportunity Join the team that is redefining how we connect with our members. Our Proactive Communications initiatives are mission-critical for driving member engagement and health outcomes, moving beyond generic notifications to create delightful interactions that guide members through their recovery journey. In this role, you will build the intelligence and infrastructure to connect with our members at the right time, with the right message, through the right channel. As a Staff Engineer, you will lead the technical architecture of our unified communications platform, collaborating with Machine Learning Scientists to orchestrate outreach across SMS, email, in-app notifications, and nudges using proprietary data and predictive models. What You'll Accomplish Architect the Communications Engine: Lead the design and scaling of a unified communications platform that orchestrates member outreach across multiple channels (SMS, email, push, in-app) with high throughput and low latency. Drive Technical Strategy: Define and guide the long-term technical roadmap for proactive outreach in partnership with product and engineering leadership, balancing immediate delivery with the flexibility to support future capabilities like Conversational AI. Integrate Intelligent Interventions: Partner with ML scientists to architect systems that integrate proprietary models into communication workflows, ensuring outreach is triggered by predictive member behaviors and needs rather than static rules. Ensure System Reliability & Scale: Optimize system performance to ensure the reliability and deliverability of member-facing messages, maintaining high standards for observability, error handling, and member privacy. Elevate Engineering Practices: Establish and evolve best practices for CI/CD, automated testing, and monitoring for both software services and ML model performance in production. Mentorship & Collaboration: Mentor senior and intermediate engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence. Build strong cross-functional partnerships across Product, Design, Marketing, and Data Science. Who You Are A Technical Visionary: You excel at navigating ambiguity and can translate complex business goals into scalable, long-term technical architectures. A "Learn-it-all": You are passionate about distributed systems and ML integration, constantly seeking new ways to leverage technology (like LLMs) to solve user problems. A Force Multiplier: You don't just write code; you elevate the entire team through mentorship, code reviews, and by establishing engineering standards that reduce friction and improve quality. A Cross-Functional Partner: You thrive in a multidisciplinary environment, collaborating effectively with Data Science and Product to deliver cohesive solutions. Basic Qualifications 8+ years of non-internship full-time professional software engineering experience, with at least 2 years working on high-scale distributed systems or communication platforms. 2+ years of experience in Python (backend/data integration) and TypeScript/Node.js (services). 2+ years of experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and containerization tools. 2+ years of experience working in distributed systems, microservices architectures, and large-scale data processing. 2+ years of experience in mentoring and leading junior team members, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams. Preferred Qualifications Communication Systems Expertise: Experience building or maintaining member-facing communication platforms (SMS, Push Notifications, Email) and familiarity with tools like Twilio, Braze, or internal notification engines. ML Integration: Experience building systems that deploy or consume ML models in production environments to drive business logic or user engagement. Conversational AI: Interest in or experience with Large Language Models (LLMs) or conversational agents as a channel for user interaction. Infrastructure as Code: Knowledge of tools like Terraform or CloudFormation. Regulated Industry Knowledge: Experience working within healthcare (HIPAA) or other highly regulated environments involving sensitive member data. Hinge Health Hybrid Model We believe that remote work and in-person work have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we want to be able to leverage the best of both worlds. Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days per week, for the full 8 hours of a typical business day. The San Francisco office has a dog-friendly workplace program. What You'll Love About Us Inclusive healthcare and benefits: On top of comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, we offer employ
