Final Filing Date: 5/27/2026 Application Methods: Electronic (Using your CalCareer Account) By Mail Drop-off Job Description and Duties STATE HISTORIAN III– SAN LUIS OBISPO COAST DISTRICT / HEARST SAN SIMEON STATE HISTORICAL MONUMENT SAN SIMEON, CA The reporting location for this position is the San Luis Obispo Coast District Office, 750 Hearst Castle Road, San Simeon, CA 93452. This position will work under the general direction of the Deputy District Superintendent. The State Historian III serves as the District's Cultural Resources Program Manager in charge of developing plans and making recommendations for identifying and protecting buildings and sites of historical significance and preparing and maintaining inventories of existing cultural resources. The State Historian III directs the work of staff to monitor, manage, and research the cultural resources of the district. The position collaborates with all Core Program Area Managers in the district and reviews Project Evaluation Forms to comply with CEQA, Public Resources Code, Section 5024, and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. This position works collaboratively both internally with district staff and managers and externally with the public, stakeholders, Tribal rights holders, local agencies, cooperating associations, and concessionaires. Possession of a valid class C drivers license is required. State Housing is not available.
