Job Description
Location Multiple Locations Available Job Type Part-Time Compensation Between $23-25/hr starting + Tips (where applicable) Paid sick leave, employee meals, and vacation time in accordance with California labor laws. Position Summary We are seeking a skilled and passionate Sushi Chef to prepare high-quality sushi and Japanese cuisine while maintaining exceptional food safety and presentation standards. The ideal candidate has experience in sushi preparation, knife handling, seafood quality control, and delivering excellent customer experiences in a fast-paced restaurant environment. Key Responsibilities Prepare sushi rolls, sashimi, nigiri, and other Japanese dishes according to restaurant recipes and standards Ensure freshness and quality of fish, rice, vegetables, and other ingredients Maintain proper food handling, sanitation, and storage procedures in compliance with California health regulations Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently Maintain cleanliness and organization of sushi station and kitchen areas Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering supplies and seafood Collaborate with kitchen staff and front-of-house team to ensure timely service Create visually appealing plate presentations Follow all workplace safety standards and company policies Qualifications Previous experience as a Sushi Chef or Sushi Cook preferred Strong knife skills and knowledge of sushi preparation techniques Understanding of seafood handling and food safety practices Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume environment Strong attention to detail and presentation Excellent teamwork and communication skills Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays Food Handler Certification required or ability to obtain one as required by California law Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods Ability to lift up to 50 pounds Manual dexterity for precision cutting and food preparation Comfortable working in refrigerated kitchen environments Preferred Skills Experience with traditional Japanese cuisine Creativity in menu development and specialty rolls Customer interaction and omakase experience Basic inventory and cost-control knowledge Equal Opportunity Statement MJ Sushi is an Equal Opportunity Employer and complies with all applicable California and federal employment laws.
