Overview Temporary 5-months Center Assistant Part-time position starting at $22.95/hr (D.O.E) 10-14 hours/week Position Hours Monday – Thursday 4:00pm -8:00pm during the school year, and Monday - Friday 9:00am-3:00pm during the summer. Location Yesler Terrace in Seattle, WA Program Description The Youth Tutoring Program (YTP) is an after-school educational enrichment program for scholars in 1st-12th grades who live in six low- and mixed-income housing communities in Seattle. First started in 1991 as a partnership with the Seattle Housing Authority, the tutoring centers provide youth with a positive learning environment and a structured tutoring program throughout the school year to help them build academic success. YTP also offers summer programming to elementary and middle school youth in the communities we serve. YTP serves nearly all people of color, primarily from immigrant and refugee households. We work within the communities we serve, and YTP’s six current locations are Jackson Park, Yesler Terrace, High Point, Rainier Vista, New Holly and Lake Washington Apartments (Rainier Beach). Position Summary YTP is currently hiring a Temporary Center Assistant for our Yesler location. This is a part-time temporary role up to 5-months. Our ideal candidate has experience working with youth in an academic setting and desires to support youth who have experienced significant educational opportunity gaps. The Tutoring Center Assistants will support the implementation of the after-school tutoring program. Primary duties will include supporting center operations, tutoring and mentoring students, and supporting volunteers and interns in their work at the tutoring center. Typical work hours will between 4-8pm Monday through Thursday, the position is currently funded for an average of 12 hours per week. This is an in-person roll. Responsibilities Responsibilities Assist the Center Supervisor in planning and coordinating after school tutoring,and be available to fulfill basic Center Supervisor responsibilities when Supervisor is not available. Work with the Center Supervisor and volunteers to assess students in math and language arts, develop individualized learning goals, and implement activities for each child. Monitor the implementation of learning goals and activities by youth interns and volunteers. Maintain organized and accessible learning materials and resources. Support volunteer and student pairs during tutoring sessions including assisting with the matching of volunteers with students,and providing guidance and support as needed. Support interns and volunteers including assistance with training,and providing mentoring and guidance in their work as tutors. Assist in the daily management of center activities. Tutor and mentor students, individually and in small groups, including the tasks below. Build supportive relationships with ongoing YTP students, helping to build their confidence as learners Follow students’ individual learning plans for structured hour-long tutoring sessions. Assist in implementing the YTP language arts and math skill-building curriculum. Assist students with homework assignments. Foster an environment where youth and adults are treated with respect and where learning is perceived to be fun, exciting and important. Assist in developing and supporting values of a culturally diverse work environment, including the tasks below. Model respectful and inclusive behavior for staff, volunteers, students and parents. Attend trainings as available to learn about students’ cultures, anti-racism, and educational skills and strategies. Assist with relationship building between tutors and students, by supporting them to learn about their student’s culture, academic goals and challenges, and best ways to support their learning. Use problem-solving skills. Perform appropriate classroom management during tutoring sessions, and utilize conflict resolutions skills with students, parents, tutors, and teachers when needed. Assist with record keeping and center organization including maintaining learning resources in an organized and accessible manner, and tracking student academic progress. Attend training workshops and staff meetings as needed. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications At least 1-year relevant class
