Job Description
JOB About us: The City of Burlington's Transportation Department is responsible for overseeing Traffic Engineering, Computerized Signals, Traffic Signal Maintenance, Traffic Signs and Markings and Link Transit. What you will do: This position involves performing manual labor to install and replace City signage and markings on roadways and buildings. The employee leads less experienced staff in tasks such as placing barricades for events, installing thermoplastic markings, and operating trucks and hand tools. Responsibilities include installing new metal and fabric signs for traffic control, buildings, and fabricating new signs, including regulatory, warning, and safety signs. The employee also learns basic traffic signal troubleshooting and works an on-call schedule to address field-related signal issues. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Signage and Post Maintenance: Cleans, straightens, and installs or removes City signage and sign postsRemoves sight obstructions like tree limbs from intersectionsSign Fabrication: Uses computer software, plotters, and tools to design and create custom signageMaterial Handling: Loads materials such as sign posts, street name plates, bolts, nuts, and necessary fluids onto the truckEquipment Operation: Operates truck, thermoplastic and painting equipment, hand tools, post drivers, and hydraulic post pullers for efficient sign and marking installationWork Zone Safety: Places barricades, cones, and safety devices around work zones; holds warning flags during work operationsTraffic Markings and Painting: Applies traffic paint for double yellow lines, arrows, stop bars, curbs, parking stalls, and railroad crossingsOperates small striping machine and measures for thermoplastic applicationsSign Installation and Supervision: Installs various signs including regulatory, warning, guide, construction, detour, and special signsAssigns tasks and trains less senior personnel on specific dutiesSign Inventory and Reporting: Uses laptop software for field sign inventory managementAdditional Duties: Performs related duties as requiredAvailability: Available for 24 hour on-call status and able to respond to emergencies SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects. Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. This employee must have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned and to perform mechanical or skilled trades’ tasks of a non-repetitive nature. Employee is subject to hazards, including noise, vibration, oils, physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, or exposure to chemicals, atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, and dusts.Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.
