Job Description
JOB Disclaimer-if the position is filled after July 1, 2026, then the job opportunity will not be in the classified service This posting is for the Traffic Engineering Division - District One Sign Shop located in Nitro, West Virginia. District One consists of the following counties: Kanawha, Mason, Putnam, Clay, and Boone. Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs manual and skilled work maintaining and repairing roadway signs. Key responsibilities include receiving and executing work orders for daily tasks, equipment, and materials. The worker is responsible for assisting with the installation and repair of signs on breakaway supports in accordance with state standards and specifications. This position also requires operating and performing preventive maintenance on state equipment. The employee must follow all procedures for traffic control and worksite safety, assist with monitoring material inventories, report material usage and needs to the supervisor, and report on the status of work performed to the crew supervisor. Performs other related duties as required. The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.In the area of assignment of Traffic Control, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.Pay Grade 11HTier 1 hourly rate: $17.5313 EXAMPLE OF DUTIES At the District level installs and removes signposts; erects traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects.Operate hydraulic post driver to set new signposts.Erect signposts and new signs along roadway.Cut old signposts with a chop saw or remove with hand tools.Utilize a torch to install pavement markings on roadway.Set up traffic control signs and flag motorists at work zones.Set up lane closures, road closures, and detours at work zones.Manufacturing signs utilizing the Central Sign Shop machinery.Distributing signs or sign accessories from Central Sign Shop to District Sign Shop.Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment.Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required.In the area of assignment of Traffic Control, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in roadway maintenance, traffic control, equipment operation or maintenance, or the fabrication of aluminum / other metal parts / other fabricated materials, comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways. Experience Substitution: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program in the area of assignment may be substituted for the required experience in the specified functional area.
