Job Description
JOB Disclaimer-if the position is filled after July 1, 2026, then the job opportunity will not be in the classified service The Transportation Worker 4 Welder in this position is assigned to the District Two Heavy Maintenance Headquarters, but will work throughout all of District Two's counties. District Two consists of Cabell, Lincoln, Logan, Mingo, and Wayne counties. The selected employee works as a professional welder within the construction and maintenance of highways and the Bridge Department. Performs advanced-level, specialized, skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways and bridges. The selected applicant will be responsible for mentoring lower-level employees. As an advanced-level welder, they will be fabricating steel using metal arc welding equipment, welding metal rebar or piling together to strengthen concrete forms or extend pilings in the construction of new bridges, along with cutting and grinding structural steel. Responsible for maintaining the welding equipment, including periodic inspection and adherence to safety protocols, as well as maintaining the following machine lathes, horizontal and vertical milling machines, drill presses, sharpeners, threader machines, and wheel lathes. Will be reading and working from blueprints and drawings. Will assist lower-level employees in advanced equipment repairs and in repairing equipment in the field by welding components, when necessary. May operate motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, and tandem-axle truck. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice. In the area of assignment of a Welder, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.Pay Grade 15HTier 1 hourly rate: $26.8713 EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Repair or construct bridges with fabricated steel using metal arc welding equipment.Welds metal rebar or piling together to strengthen concrete forms or extend pilings in the construction of new bridges.Cut and grind structural steel.Separate weld seams.Maintain welding equipment, including periodic inspection and adherence to safety protocols.Repair equipment in the field by welding components, if necessary.Re-machine universal joints and gears that are rebuilt with welds.Maintains and operates machines, including lathes, horizontal and vertical milling machines, drill presses, sharpeners, threader machines, and wheel lathes.Read and work from blueprints and drawings.Machine parts.Lead or train lower-level transportation workers.Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.In the area of assignment of Welder, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Five (5) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in welding.Special Requirements: Must hold an Iron Worker’s Card or, within six (6) months of hire, pass the DOT Welding Certification is required in the area of Welding.No Substitutions.Promotional Opportunity: Option #1: Five (5) years of combined experience in Bridge Construction/Repair and/or Welding. OR Option #2: Certification as a welder by the Department of Transportation may substitute for the required five (5) years of welding experience.No Substitutions.
