Job Description
Overview: We are seeking passionate and energetic UPK (Universal Pre-Kindergarten) Teachers to lead 3- and 4-year-old classrooms in our Head Start program in Syracuse. In this role, you will inspire young learners through engaging lessons, nurturing classroom environments, and developmentally appropriate activities that foster curiosity and growth. Your dedication will help lay a strong foundation for children's future learning, social-emotional development, and overall well-being. This full-time position offers a steady work schedule of weekdays 7:30am to 3:30pm, with paid leave for all school-year holidays and breaks plus additional accumulated paid leave, and a 7-week temporary unpaid layoff every summer with eligibility for unemployment benefits. Positions start 8/24/2026. Responsibilities: Develop and implement dynamic curriculum plans in a classroom setting tailored to the developmental needs of 3- or 4-year-olds, working with an assistant and an aide. Create a safe, welcoming classroom environment that promotes positive behavior management and encourages active participation. Deliver engaging lessons that support childhood development milestones, including language acquisition, motor skills, and early intervention strategies. Use classroom management techniques to maintain order and foster respectful interactions among students. Assess student progress regularly through observations and standardized testing; adapt teaching strategies accordingly. Collaborate with families, colleagues, and specialists to support each child's individual learning plan and overall welfare. Maintain accurate records of lesson plans, student assessments, and behavioral observations in compliance with educational standards. Qualifications: Proven experience working with children in preschool or daycare settings; prior classroom management experience is highly valued. NYS Teaching Certification or Bachelor's degree in early childhood education or a related field. Strong knowledge of early childhood education principles, including curriculum development and literacy education. Familiarity with special education practices, early intervention techniques, and behavior management strategies. Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with children, parents, and team members. Ability to plan lessons that incorporate physical education, math concepts, and social-emotional learning tailored for preschoolers.
