Job Description
We are seeking a highly proficient Structural Steel Welder/Fabricator to interpret engineering drawings and fabricate, assemble, and weld structural steel components. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, an unwavering commitment to safety, and the ability to produce high-quality work in a fast-paced environment. You will be responsible for transforming raw steel into the beams, columns, and trusses that form the backbone of major construction projects. Key Responsibilities Read and Interpret Blueprints: Accurately read and understand complex shop drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols to determine specifications and requirements. Fabrication: Set up and operate fabrication machinery such as shears, ironworkers, drill presses, and CNC burning tables to cut, bevel, and punch steel components. Layout and Fitting: Measure, lay out, and fit up structural steel components (beams, columns, plates, etc.) according to drawings, using jigs, fixtures, and clamps to prepare for welding. Welding: Perform various welding processes, primarily FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding) and SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) , in all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) to fabricate structural steel members. Quality Control: Perform visual inspections of welds and fabricated parts to ensure they meet specified quality standards and project requirements. Material Handling: Safely operate overhead cranes, jib cranes, and forklifts to move and position heavy steel materials. Grinding and Finishing: Use grinders and other tools to clean spatter, smooth welds, and prepare steel surfaces for painting or shipping as required. Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), lockout/tagout, and safe handling of materials and equipment. Team Collaboration: Work effectively as part of a team to meet production schedules and project deadlines. Required Skills and Qualifications High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Minimum of 3 years of proven experience as a structural steel welder/fabricator. Proficiency with FCAW and SMAW welding processes. Ability to pass a 3G and 4G weld test (vertical and overhead) as a condition of employment. Strong ability to read and interpret structural and fabrication drawings. Experience with common fabrication shop machinery (ironworkers, drills, saws, etc.). Knowledge of AWS (American Welding Society) D1.1 Structural Steel Code is a plus. Ability to accurately use measuring tools (tape measures, calipers, squares, levels). Reliable, punctual, and able to work with minimal supervision. Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for long periods, and working in a demanding shop environment. Preferred Qualifications Formal certification from a technical school or apprenticeship program. Certified Welder (CW) certification through the AWS. Experience with other welding processes (GMAW, GTAW). Experience operating a forklift and/or overhead crane. Familiarity with basic rigging practices.
