Position Summary This position works in the shipyard setting to lead welding activities for structure, equipment, and other furnishings on commercial vessels under supervision of Welding Supervisor. Duties And Responsibilities Read blueprints and drawings and take or read measurements to plan layout and procedures. Determine the appropriate equipment or methods based on requirements. Select and follow the appropriate welding procedure for the task. Carry out nondestructive weld inspections such as air lancing and vacuum boxing. Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g. cut material with powered saws to match measurements). Operate angle grinders with guard to prepare the parts that must be welded. Weld aluminum, steel, stainless steel, copper nickel, and other metals. Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal, or overhead). Use various types of welding equipment and techniques including but not limited to MIG, TIG, Oxy-Acetylene Torch, flux-core arc welding, and Plasma Cutters. Weld vessel superstructure, tanks, fuel tanks, furnishings, and equipment. Use flame, plasma arc, and other cutting processes to trim parts before welding to ensure proper alignment or fit, to remove obstructions or to cut materials when necessary onsite. Prepare surfaces of material to be welded, proper fit up, welding sequences, parameters, proper size, and type of filler materials required for welding projects. Set up preheating and stress relieving equipment, controlling critical interpass temperature, inspecting joint geometry, and operate portable grinding and finishing equipment. Align components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces. Test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws. May be assigned as hot work fire watch as needed. Able to work in confined spaces as required and aloft from heights as needed. Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety. Attention to detail: Must perform all tasks in compliance with regulatory agency standards. Assists with general operations of the yard, including but not limited to: removal of vessels from water using movable lift crane; moving vessels in the yard; positioning and securing blocking at the bottom and sides of the vessel according to size, weight, and weight distribution of vessels, using fasteners, hand tools and power tools. Follow prescribed safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe, clean work area. Follow hot work permit procedures. Move equipment and materials to and from jobsite. Able to work cooperatively with other department personnel. Conduct yourself with a positive and contagious attitude for others to emulate. Keep the Master Welder and others informed about project status and issues that may impact client relations.
