Description Under direction of a supervisory official in the Department of Environmental Protection, operates, navigates, and maintains assigned boats, motors, and trailers; works to protect and conserve shellfish and marine finfish, and/or does work involved in marking channels, towing marine equipment, and enforcing applicable laws and regulations; does other related duties as required. Specific to the Position Assigns, instructs and supervises a crew engaged in the marking and maintenance of stakes, buoys, spars and lights. Operation and maintenance of the 70-foot Ocean Navigator, landing craft, and all other boats under ATON's responsibilities, including the loading, hauling, and deployment of such vessels. Preferred Skill Set Specific knowledge of the waterways of NJ as well as the vessels and equipment used to mark the channels including the ability observe, diagnose, and repair said equipment. Strong written and verbal skills required to confer with assigned staff, coordinate with office staff on procurement and installation schedules, and coordinate with outside agencies. Requirements Five (5) years of experience in navigation of coastal waters in boats operated by marine diesel, inboard, or outboard gasoline engines, including at least one (1) year of experience as captain, mate, or second-in-command in the navigation of small craft. License Applicants must possess a current Boat Safety Certificate. NOTE: Possession of a current, valid United States Coast Guard Master License may be substituted for the indicated experience (100 ton, 200 ton, 500 ton, or unlimited). NOTE: Possession of a current, valid United States Coast Guard Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (6-pack) license may be substituted for two (2) years of indicated experience. NOTE: An Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels License or a Master's License issued by the United States Coast Guard, currently valid for the type and size vessel being operated, may be substituted for the Boating Safety Certificate. Applicants will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position. Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
